Warrior Wellness

“It’s difficult to see these powerful warriors feeling so desperate and alone, unsure of their purpose and how to move forward,” said Elijah Sacra, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and Executive Director and co-founder of Warrior Wellness Solutions, a non-profit dedicated to empowering the mental, physical and spiritual health of our nation’s warriors and their families.

As we celebrate Memorial Day in the United States and honor those who gave their lives for this country, we also remember the veterans who fight each day to get their lives back on track when they return home.

According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, there are 21.3 million veterans living in the United States. Oftentimes, when these veterans return home, it is only the beginning of their journey. It’s no easy task to leave the realities of combat behind. Most face new physical, emotional and spiritual challenges. Chronic pain, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS) are the most common. The veterans are in search of solutions that conventional medicine is not offering. They feel isolated and try to handle their situation on their own. Many fall into depression and withdraw from family and friends.

The journey to healing

Elijah Sacra knows all too well how difficult that transition back to civilian life can be. He was injured multiple times in the 1990s during training, and despite dealing with chronic pain for years, kept his struggles to himself. Finally, he and Alvaro Matta, a Gulf War and Somalia Veteran and fellow Marine he served with, took action. They embarked on a multi-year process to heal themselves through personal training and yoga. That’s when he met Clarissa Kussin, Warrior Wellness Solutions co-founder, an integrative nutrition and functional medicine health coach, yoga and mindfulness teacher.

“We knew instantly that our collective experiences and training delivered in a personalized approach could assist wounded, ill and injured vets to restart their lives,” said Sacra.

Collaboration and coordination

While the partnerships fueling Warrior Wellness Solutions proved to be a collaborative one, their schedules and services became difficult to coordinate. The team saw clients on different schedules, recommended follow-up at different times and precious time was lost. “The collaboration process did not allow for us to maximize our potential and productivity” said Sacra.

Enter LivingMatrix. A functional medicine platform that enables practitioners to engage patients and clients in the therapeutic process, LivingMatrix also helps practitioners easily share outcomes with the other professionals in the community.

“Before LivingMatrix, I spent four to five hours per week just catching up on paperwork,” said Elijah Sacra. “LivingMatrix’s built-in automation and efficiency gave us more time to engage with our clients. LivingMatrix has helped me get rid of the ‘administrative vortex’ and focus on more important issues.”

Veterans in the Warrior Wellness Solutions practice, many of whom suffer from significant issues like PTS and traumatic brain injury, appreciate it, too. LivingMatrix provides easy visualization of their areas of strength and their issues, which helps them understand the “why” and allows the team to work with them to begin the healing process and more rapidly deliver life-changing results.
